What are phone reviews?

Phone reviews are when Aspect calls your customers to get reviews on your behalf. Phone reviews are typically longer and richer while reaching a higher percentage of the customers you ask.

A phone review gathers more context than a typed review

The average person talks 3x faster than they can type. In one minute, phone reviews will generate about 150 words compared to only 50 from typed reviews. That additional context feeds LLMs and AI visibility.

Phone reviews are a conversation

Phone reviews are the only time a person can ask follow-up questions to get the full experience.

Aspect by ConsumerAffairs’ Consumer Advocates call a sample of your customers and record their stories and experiences. Almost no other review platform offers to call your customers, but that’s what makes Aspect different.

Phone reviews extract detailed stories from customers because your Consumer Advocate can ask follow-up questions. With an email or form, you can only ask how the installation went, which only gets “good.”

A conversation can follow up with a question like “What did the crew do?” The answer you get there provides more context for future customers, LLMs, and Google Search.

Furthermore, roughly 1 in 6 people will talk with a Consumer Advocate, whereas typically only 1–2% of people answer an email request. This means that if you need to get a review from a smaller audience, you’ll get a much larger sample.

Over email or a form

Question: How did the installation go?

Answer: Good.

Over the phone

Question: How did the installation go?

Answer: Good.

Follow-up: What did the crew do?

Answer: They called ahead, protected the floors, and walked me through the warranty before they left.

Conversations produce more nuance than a keyboard warrior

Academic research and ConsumerAffairs review data both show that spoken responses produce longer, higher quality results.

A 2024 study in Social Science Computer Review found that spoken answers have more detail and are higher quality than typed answers. In reviews, you see the same pattern:

  1. Speaking is faster than typing, and
  2. A conversation invites more detail, so
  3. You get a better story for the same amount of effort.

With Aspect, you can upload your phone list and we do all the work for you.

The phone review advantage is clear in the example that follows. You can see the review live on ConsumerAffairs. It names a specific problem, a person who solved it, and an outcome, all of which help a review to get cited by Google.

Reviewed Sept. 29, 2024 · Endurance Warranty

“I got a letter in the mail about the extended warranty on the first vehicle that we got Endurance on. We gave them a call, we got it, and when we had a claim, they did damn well with it. There was something wrong with the AC system. They had to take it in twice, and they did a really good job. We gave the shop the info that’s on the ID card that Endurance gave us and then they handled everything. We paid a $100 deductible. Getting signed up was really good. Their salesperson was awesome. She explained everything very well. It was a really good experience in general. They tell you everything there is. They try to help you out as much as possible, if you can get into certain discounts. I like that if you get the five-year plan, you only have to pay for three years and it’s actually not like you pay the whole. You got 60 months. You don’t make payments 60 months. You only make payments for 30 months, which is damn awesome.”

Frequently asked questions about phone reviews

What is a phone review, exactly?
A phone review is a review collected through a live phone conversation, usually a business calling a sample of its own customer list, rather than a review typed into a web form or clicked from an email link.
Isn’t a phone call more annoying than a text or email?
A call takes more effort per contact than an automated text or email, but it happens once, to a small, random sample of your customers, not as a repeated nudge to everyone on your list. If your customers already expect a follow-up call after a purchase, it reads as a check-in rather than an interruption.
Doesn’t someone typing carefully remember just as much as someone talking?
The evidence points the other way. Speaking is faster than typing, so a person gets more detail out in the same amount of time, and a live caller can ask a follow-up question a form has no way to ask, a pattern confirmed in a 2024 randomized study of typed versus spoken survey answers.
Are phone reviews more trustworthy? Do they score higher?
Not on star rating. In the one program we checked closely, phone-collected reviews didn’t average higher than form-collected reviews. What phone collection changes is depth and how hard a review is to mass-produce, not the number itself.
Can’t a phone review be faked too?
Voice can be synthesized, so no collection method is literally unfakeable. What makes phone collection harder to game at scale is the process. Every review comes from a live call to a specific, verified person on a list you uploaded, not an open link anyone can submit through.
How does phone collection compare with SMS, email and web links, and what if a customer doesn’t want to be called?
Phone is one of four ways to collect reviews, alongside web links, email and SMS. See review collection methods compared for how they stack up on volume, quality and consistency. Calls go out to your own customer list, not cold contacts, and that page covers the consent and opt-out questions in more detail.
